Scattered Pieces
A documentary film about the communication of
earthquake risk in Kazakhstan
Scattered Pieces is a documentary film made in collaboration with Professor Greg Bankoff. The film explores the visualisation of earthquake risk in Central Asia. Working with protagonist Syrlybek Bekbotayev, a Kazakh contemporary artist, the film follows his efforts to communicate risk to the public. This includes the risks associated with both urban and rural contexts. Through a workshop in Almaty and murals painted on the walls of buildings in his village of Konyr Tobe in a rural location in the south of Kazakhstan, Syrlybek discusses the message that he wants to communicate through his work.
The film is currently in the final editing stages and is being prepared for festival release in 2022.
The project is produced with support from the Natural Environment Research Council and the Economic and Social Research Council.
